Hello Pumas and families!
I am Ms. Burnett. I am so excited to be teaching 7th-grade Science at Pinacate Middle School this year.
I grew up in Rialto, California, and have lived in Southern California's Inland Empire my whole life. I raised my family in Moreno Valley and now live in a tiny desert community. I first obtained an Associate's of Science degree in Natural Science from Riverside Community College, followed by Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Cal State University, San Bernardino. I also earned my teaching credentials from CSUSB, followed by a Master's of Education degree in Secondary Science Education from Grand Canyon University. In addition to science, my interests include drawing and painting, photography, spending time with my pets and family, camping on the beach in Mexico, reading, and gardening.
I have been teaching in the Perris Union High School District for over 20 years. I've taught at both Pinacate and Heritage High School in my tenure with PUHSD. I've taught Life Science, Physical Science, Basic Mathematics, Pre-Algebra, Art, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Introduction to Technology, and 7th and 8th-grade Integrated Science. In 2009-2010, I was honored as Pinacate's Teacher of the Year. I was the Gifted Education (GATE) Coordinator and Yearbook Advisor at Pinacate for many years. I have also advised and mentored students through clubs and student organizations. It has been inspirational, motivational, and an honor to help empower so many students in so many ways throughout my career, educating Perris' best. The most rewarding aspect of my experiences has been the ongoing and long time relationships I've developed with so many students and their families. Seeing my former students as they reach success in college, career, and family has been a pleasure.
The learning management system we will be using in this science class will be Canvas and Google Classroom. Each class will have a unique Google Classroom page that can be accessed through Canvas and also directly, for both students and parents. Students will regularly complete class assignments using the many Google Apps for Education, such as Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Draw. We will also use Flipgrid, Quizizz, games, projects, presentations, and other exciting and fun ways to complete assignments and demonstrate learning. All students will access all class content using their PUHSD student email and will need to REGULARLY communicate, participate, turn in assignments promptly, and meet rigorous academic expectations to pass the course successfully.
The curriculum we will be using to deliver NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) science content is through Discovery Education Science, a complete science program that has been adopted by our district. It is available online, as well as in individual assignments prepared directly through Canvas and Google Classroom. There are articles for students to listen to and read, activities, demonstrations, and experiments, as well as videos, series, and virtual field trips. Most all the Discovery Education material is available for different learning modalities and ability levels and in both English and Spanish. I am confident families, and students will appreciate all Discovery has to offer and how accessible the content is.
I will do everything in my power to assist students' success. I will be available for both synchronous instruction during live virtual instruction and to respond to student concerns and questions via email and Google Classroom during asynchronous instruction. We will use a variety of instructional methods and tools and address content from many perspectives. I hope to maximize instruction and EMPOWER ALL STUDENTS in their active understanding and learning while STUDENTS strive for and reach personal academic success. I'm truly looking forward to the classroom community we will develop, as well as the progress each student will experience in our class this year.
Respectfully,
Ms. Burnett
